Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point

My sister Colette and I went to the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point. We had been wanting to do it for years and finally decided just to go. There were thousands of tulips throughout the 5 1/2 acre gardens. I couldn't believe how many tulips there were. I recommend Thanksgiving Point to everyone!

We rented Segways and it was so much fun. Lots of people stopped us to ask about them. I really enjoyed doing spins on the Segway but a couple of times I got spinning so fast I was nearly thrown off. It reminded me of the time I had to take Chris to the Emergency Room for his own Segway injury.

They used to have a place at The Gateway where you could ride Segways. They had a course built up with wooden ramps and all kinds of obstacles. We went there a few years ago with the Albretsens and of course Chris and the boys ended up racing each other around the course on the Segways. Chris and Codey got to one of the wooden ramps and the same time and Codey just edged out Chris and it pushed Chris off the edge of the ramp, which happened to be made of plywood. The edges of the plywood were all beat up and it cut his finger pretty bad...bad enough that we went straight to the emergency room. Because we weren't really familiar with the local hospital system we ended up at what had to be the scariest hospital in all of downtown Salt Lake City. (The person in the bed next to us had been stabbed but he was refusing treatment because he didn't want it to mess up his tatoo.) The doctor determined that Chris' thumbnail had to be removed in order to stitch things up properly. They proceeded to inject his thumb to numb it but it never got numb. They tried about five times. Chris tells me that getting an injection at the base of your nail is very painful. Finally, they decided he must have some weird tolerance to local anesthetic and that they would have to do conscious sedation. The nurse that was in charge of the sedation was so scary-looking. He had long, straggly hair and looked like he hadn't showered in days. We called him Lurch. After about five hours in the E.R., they finally got his nail removed and the cut stitched up. We couldn't wait to get out of there. The doctor told us that his nail might never grow back but thankfully, it did....after about a year. I guess it was just so painful and traumatic that Chris will never ride a Segway again. The funny thing is when he broke his collar bone a few months ago, he was in Salt Lake and he refused to go to a hospital there. He drove himself to Ogden Regional and I met him there.
